Durham Library Uses Meld to Commemorate History and Pioneer Green Future

Meld is featured in the new Durham South Regional Library for both countertops and flooring. Freelon, the project architect, selected a custom blue shade  (#227) of Meld ecoX for the information desk countertops. And, custom Meld floor inserts were crafted to commemorate the hi story of the jobsite, which was the former Lowes Grove School established in the 1890s. To do this, the floor tiles have historical facts embedded in them. Meld ecoX contains 74% recycled content and is made locally, helping contribute to the project’s LEED silver goal. The 25,000 SQFT library has an impressive list of sustainability attributes, which include:
    •    Designed to be 69% more energy efficient than a comparable baseline building
    •    Reduced water usage by 44%
    •    Over 80% of construction waste was recycled
    •    Landscaped with drought resistant plant species that do not require irrigation
    •    Use of products such as carpets, paints and adhesives that do not off-gas.
    •    CO2 monitors to ensure optimum levels of fresh air
    •    Daylight in over 75% of regularly occupied spaces
    •    Views to the exterior from over 90% of regularly occupied spaces
Meld concrete is available in either stocked and readily available pre-cast slabs that are 30" x 96" x 1 1/2" or in custom shapes, sizes, colors and glass options tailored to the needs of individual projects, such as the Durham Library.  Meld has over a decade of experience designing and engineering concrete products.

Flores & Associates in Charlotte Uses TorZo and Strives for LEED Silver

Overcash Demmitt Architects recently designed a new 20,000 SQFT, three-story office building for Flores & Associates in Charlotte, NC. The design featured TorZo Seeta countertops in Cocoa, from CaraGreen, which offered a unique look and sustainability. TorZo Seeta is made from 70% recycled and rapidly renewable sunflower seeds. The sheets are saturated with an acrylic resin, which make them hard and durable. The project, which has submitted for LEED Silver, integrated recycled content products, regional materials, certified wood, a green roof, and urban location to help with sustainability and to achieve their LEED goals.  Tim Demmitt said that Torzo was a “unique product with a refined look that offers sustainability” which they would use again.

Durat Glows at The Art Institute of Chicago’s Terzo Piano Restaurant

Terzo Piano Restaurant, located within the Modern Wing at the Art Institute of Chicago, used Durat tabletops in its elegant and predominantly white design. Durat, available through CaraGreen, is a solid surface material that contains at least 30% recycled content and is 100% recyclable. The tabletops, made from brilliant white Durat practically glow, as the space has large areas of windows and amazing natural light that radiates off the surface. The restaurant, which can seat 250 patrons, was the work of Dirk Denison Architects. The space was designed so that the restaurant would continue the experience of the museum into the dining area.  There are display cabinets that rotate pieces from the Museum’s collection and bring character into the various dining areas. A critical aspect of the design was the concept of changeability, as the restaurant is lunch-only, but the space doubles as a banquet space for private evening events. To accommodate this duality, there are movable furniture pieces and flexible seating arrangements.  And, the white palette allows guests to dress the room as they see fit. Eco-Terr Tile Used in New Soho Beach House Hotel

Soho Beach House, which just opened this fall in Miami, used Eco-Terr tiles, available through CaraGreen, in its design. Soho Beach House is an oceanfront boutique hotel and private members’ club. This is the third North American property for Soho House, who has properties in Europe as well.  Using inspiration from Miami Beach history, Eco-Terr tiles, were a natural fit and used in the lobby and pool area.

Martin Brudnizki was the Interior Designer for the project and combined Miami’s historical South American and Art Deco styles with the Soho brand’s European glamour. Eco-Terr terrazzo tiles were chosen as flooring for both the lobby and the pool deck and washrooms. A traditional wood-paneled lobby exhibits part of Soho House’s art collection, has a Cuban coffee bar, and has a grand piano, which is complimented by Eco-Terr in Oyster White and Moor Green. The Art Deco inspired elegance continues to the pool deck with a 100-foot-long pool bordered by communal lounge beds and gardens where members and guests can relax and socialize while en joying full waiter service.  Oyster White and Baby Blue Eco-Terr surround the deck and washrooms and seam nicely with antiqued cement tiles in the adjoining courtyard.  The Eco-Terr tiles were cut on site to make various patterns and borders for the floor.

Treat Cupcake Bar Brightens Space with Pink and Yellow Durat

C & J Katz Studio, the designers for the newly opened Treat Cupcake Bar in Needham, MA, used Durat sheet goods in the shop’s design.  Jeffrey Katz told CaraGreen that “the shop is aimed at ‘tween' customers, so the idea was to create a bright, happy interior space.” They established a color palette for the interior based on graphics developed by Treat’s graphic design firm.

Katz said, “As we were researching materials, we found a couple of the unusual
colors that we were looking for in the Durat range.”  Durat is available in over 80 colors and custom colors are also available.  The colors have an intensity and vibrancy to them that make Durat ideal for delivering a punch of color to a space.

At Treat Cupcake Bar, customers can create their own cupcake by selecting the cake flavor, frosting, and toppings.  They mix the toppings into the frosting and Katz told us that the other requirement for the material was that it needed to function for the mix-ins, which are prepared directly on the counter in view of the customer. They "ordered a large sample and sent it to the baker so she could test the surface. It worked. So the combination of color, functionality, and durability lead us to specify Durat,” said Katz. Durat was used for work surfaces, a built-in along the window, and to frame the cupcake display. Katz said the response to the store has been excellent, both to the cupcakes and
the design of the space.
