We were so excited to head to GreenBuild and see what Boston had in store. Familiar faces and some new innovations were present, most notably the presence of “biophilia” and “Biophilic design.”

While Green and Build may have some word fatigue, Biophilic Design is THE hot topic for building materials Emanating nature in a space, lots of literal green instead of just the word are really trending in materials.

Texture is also the feel good feature of many building products. The hands on aesthetic is really taking off in building materials.

Acoustics is also making itself heard, with a big focus on human comfort. Sorry, Loud Diedre in Cube 6, we are tuning you out with some sound control.

Walking the Talk with ECOfusion Flooring

ECOfusion stepped it up this month with its successful passing of California's Section 01350 test protocol standard for VOC emissions.  Now you can specify the Pro-core proprietary engineered strandwoven flooring and breathe a little easier knowing that it meets these stringent requirements.  This testing standard also meets the LEED v4 requirements for interior materials and VOC emissions.   ECOfusion is already a no-added urea formaldehyde (NAUF) flooring, but this standard takes that even further. More information and testing results can be obtained by emailing us.

For product binders and samples email or call 919.929.3009.

We Take Our Work Home with Us

We believe in work-life balance, but with products like ours, how can you not take work home with you? During a recent renovation at her home in Pittsboro, NC, CaraGreen‘s Barbara Ford used Standard Grade Poplar Panels from BarkHouse as cabinet insets, EcoFusion strandwoven bamboo Colorfusion in African Safari for flooring and UltraTouch recycled denim insulation in the walls.  The Fords were adding a master bedroom and wanted it to have a treehouse feel to it, which they achieved using this suite of CaraGreen products.

Spring Cleaning

The focus of the design community on mitigating waste has resulted in interest in less “sample heavy” design libraries.  We hear you!  We have color cards that capture the aesthetics and color palette for most of our products and offer these in lieu of bulky sample boxes when requested.  A library “refresh” is more of a “clean out” for a lot of firms, as materials change.  If you would like any color cards for Durat, Meld, BarkHouse, PaperStone, EcoFusion, or TorZo, please let us know and we can drop them off or email them to your firm.

Please email or call 919.929.3009 with any requests.

Greenbridge Live Here Lounge Features EcoFusion and Meld

Greenbridge Condominiums' sales office, dubbed the Live Here Lounge, features EcoFusion flooring and Meld countertops from CaraGreen. The space was designed by Sitzer Spuria Studios to reflect the sustainable values of the multi-use development. EcoFusion floors are Color Fusion Strand Woven bamboo in color Morning Mist. EcoFusion uses thru-color technology to dye bamboo strands using pure plant-based pigments. The technology dramatically increases the life cycle of the floor as dents and deep scratches do not require repair as color appears throughout the wear layer. Meld Micro, in color #61 Cement, was used for counters which contains 70% recycled content. Other sustainable features include scraplights by graypants which are crafted from recycled cardboard and Paperstone countertops.

Tonic Design Takes 2013 Matzumoto Prize for Rank House

Tonic Design won the 2013 Matsumoto Prize for the Rank House! The home has EcoFusion Color Fusion Strand Woven bamboo floors from CaraGreen throughout. The Matsumoto Prize is in its second year and was created by North Carolina Modernist Houses in honor of George Matsumoto, a founding faculty member of the NCSU School of Design who created some of the state's most highly regarded Modernist houses. The Prize encourages young architects to keep North Carolina’s residential modern architecture thriving. The unique competition uses a jury of internationally known architects, as well as online public voting, to determine the winners of their cash prizes. The professional jury’s top pick was the Rank House a “modern gothic” structure designed by Katherine Hogan and Vinny Petrarca of Tonic Design + Construction. This house, which also won the People’s Choice third-prize award, was cited for its use of stairs as an “ordering element” inside the home and the effective way that the architects accommodated the needs of the homeowners, who are father and son. For a tour of the Rank House, check out this video. Or, for information on EcoFusion floors, click here.

2 - Durat Bath Tub - Our bright green Durat tub was a showstopper. When admirers learned it was available in over 60 colors, we saw the design wheels turning.
3 - TorZo Tiikeri Sapphire - The unique look of TorZo Tiikeri in a brilliant blue color appealed to those seeking an exotic, refined, and durable material.
4 - ECOfusion Strand Woven Eucalyptus Flooring - Eucalyptus flooring was new to many showgoers. ECOfusion revealed two beautiful new stained eucalyptus flooring colors at the show, a white and dark brown.

CaraGreen Now A Distributor for ECOfusion Flooring

ECOfusion bamboo and eucalyptus flooring is the latest addition to CaraGreen’s sustainable product portfolio. ECOfusion blends rapidly renewable natural materials and “fuses” them into innovative, beautiful, and durable flooring. All of their products are free of added urea formaldehyde and are rapidly renewable, meaning they contribute to numerous LEED credits.

ECOfusion has the widest range of colors in bamboo flooring that we've seen. And, they have the only color infused bamboo flooring on the market. ECOfusion uses thru-color technology to dye bamboo strands using pure plant-based pigments. The technology dramatically increases the life cycle of the floor as dents and scratches do not require repair as color appears throughout the wear layer.

ECOfusion’s engineered bamboo strand woven flooring is 100% bamboo unlike other products that use wood as a substrate. ECOfusion’s proprietary cross-grain bamboo core features strand woven bamboo on the top and bottom, which provides optimal performance and stability in all climates.

ECOfusion has a wide range of flooring options including bamboo, eucalyptus, solid, engineered, color infused, stained, and carbonized. Their products are suited for both commercial and residential applications.

Musician Soars, ECOfusion Floors

After winding down a long, pastoral, gravel road in Pittsboro, NC, we arrived at the soaring modern home of musician, Michael Rank. At four floors, it’s the tallest house ever created by Tonic Design, the architect and builder. Its black aluminum and gray cement exterior cut through the country landscape and sky. Ranks’ favorite “colors” – black, gray, and white – canvas the exterior and interior.

Rank, who just released a new album, “In The Weeds”, with his band, Stag, also just completed construction on his new modern home, and used ECOfusion Color Fusion strand woven bamboo flooring from CaraGreen throughout. The ECOfusion bamboo flooring is a dark gray grounding color, called Morning Mist, with subtle flecks of blue and brown. The effect is created when ECOfusion uses its thru-color technology to dye the bamboo strands using pure plant-based pigments.

As Rank welcomed us into his home, the stark white walls stood in marked contrast to the dark floors. The colorless walls enable his extensive art collection – amassed through many years frequenting galleries while on tour – to be the focal point. “When art is always in the same place, your eye stops looking at it,” Rank said, explaining why he wanted picture ledges installed throughout the home. “Now I can change out the art as often as I like.” Rank still had a rack of unhung art in his library, so he should have plenty to move into fresh rotation.

The sheer height and open core of the home are remarkable. While some of the passages induced vertigo for me, the catwalks made of open grated steel and stairs without risers enable the intentional vertical design to be ever present. The concept of building up was Rank’s own. “I overcame my fear of heights when working construction and now I get perverse pleasure from it.” For those of us who have not yet overcome our fear of heights, Rank does have a back spiral staircase, which I took down. Rank interjected, “My son prefers this one, too.”
