PaperStone is one of the most versatile, easy to use, and sustainable surfacing materials available on the market. And with its matte, organic finish available in 13 different colors, it is an ideal material for kitchens, bathrooms, cladding, furniture, and more.
But what is PaperStone, exactly? And how is it made? Follow along to learn just that.
1. Start with recycled paper
PaperStone gets its namesake from the recycled paper used to create the material. To start, PaperStone manufacturers take brown recycled paper. This paper is very fibrous and comprises the many layers that will create the material.
2. Add petroleum-free resin
The brown paper is then combined with a proprietary, non-toxic phenolic resin. This plant-based resin fully encapsulates the paper fibers, creating PaperStone's strong and durable structure.
3. Add pigment
Color is then added to the saturated paper-phenolic mixtures. PaperStone uses ultra-saturated pigments as opposed to dyes, resulting in non-fading, vibrant shades.
4. Cut and Stack
The sheets are then cut and stacked to vary and match the six available thicknesses available.
5. Add heat and pressure
Once the sheets are stacked to the desired thickness, intense heat and pressure are applied in a hot press. This curing process continues until the resin is fully solidified into a three-dimensional solid mass surrounding the cellulose fibers.
6. The final result? A beautiful, durable, and highly sustainable surfacing material.
