Top Of The Rock: Lapitec Takes NYC

During one of the hottest weeks in July, distributors across North America convened in New York City to attend LAB Days, where Lapitec revealed their plans for the future of our favorite sintered stone material. Along with new colors and exciting brand changes to come, it gave us an opportunity to convene with our fellow distributors to learn and grow. Lapitec sintered stone is a product that was developed out of a desire to evolve the building materials industry, creating a product made of 100% natural minerals and that is 100% better than its predecessors. We can’t wait to see how they continue to grow over the coming months.

Get. Stronger. Materials.

With skyrocketing tariffs, toxic ingredients, and crumbling quality, quartz and granite quickly devolved from America’s surfacing sweetheart to the stuff of nightmares. But did you know there are stronger things? Lapitec sintered stone is made from 100% minerals and is turning the surfacing industry upside down. In tandem with the release of the 3rd season of Netflix’s Stranger Things, we’ll be diving deep into why Lapitec is the strongest surfacing, cladding, and decking material out there. Follow along on Instagram.

Trouble In Silica Valley

If you were looking for yet another reason to ditch quartz and seek out healthier surfacing options, the latest news will have you headed for the hills (the hills of Italy to grab some sintered stone, if you ask us). According to recent reports, the effects of processing engineered stone are resulting in a critical silicosis epidemic. Silicosis is a life-threatening lung disease caused by breathing in tiny bits of silica found in materials like quartz. A healthy environment starts with healthy people. Using materials like Lapitec, PaperStone, and Durat, which contain zero to trace amounts of silica, promote health at every level, from production to installation.

Partners That Make Our Bedrock

Working with Lapitec requires finding approved and certified fabricators. When we look for Lapitec-certified fabricators to partner with, we make sure to choose only the best of the best. That’s why we don’t take our partnership with ROCK’interiors for granite. Only a stone’s throw away from the CaraGreen warehouse (last one, we promise), ROCK’interiors was an early adopter of Lapitec and has done so much with their material. This Lapitec basement kitchen install is one of many examples of their incredible work.

Enter The Why (Why Lapitec?, that is)

It’s hard out there in the surfacing world, folks (pun intended). With the multitude of tariffs, trade wars, and tomfoolery afoot in the industry, consumers are looking for more sophisticated, healthy, durable, and more sustainable surfacing options to meet their surfacing needs. Enter Lapitec, the next generation surfacing material that makes your neighbor’s quartz countertop seem as garish as your grandma’s wig.

So why Lapitec? Over the next few weeks, we’re taking a deeper look into #whylapitec is the surfacing material that is overtaking the present and owning the future. Be sure to follow along over the next few weeks on Instagram and LinkedIn

KBIS 2019 Recap: What’s New in the New Year

The Kitchen and Bath show hit the strip in Vegas alongside the International Builder Show with its unfortunate acronym. At least referring to “KBIS” is less gut-wrenching, so to speak. Here is a recap of what we saw that is of interest in the surfacing space, sprinkled with our thoughts and opinions, of course!

Sinter is Coming

Game of Stones. The go-to surface has shifted from quartz to more progressive thinking companies like Lapitec, who designed the surface of the future: sintered stone. Designed to withstand the elements and enable healthier living in healthier spaces, sintered stone outperforms quartz and natural stone on all levels. Designed by Breton, one of the most innovative companies in man-made stone, Lapitec has decades of expertise incorporated into its recipe and inherent characteristics which make it the superior surface on the market. Quartz may be on its final season.

Legislation Thwarts Quartz - Sinter is Coming

GOT jokes?

This is actually no joke. The saga continues for the quartz industry, as more legislation on anti-dumping rains down on the quartz industry. A November 14th ruling on anti-dumping tariffs resulting from the Cambria lawsuit means another 300+% tariff on top of the countervailing and government trade war tariffs that are already in place on quartz surfaces. You can read more about it on our blog or hear more about it on our podcast.

Hello, haven’t we been telling you about Lapitec sintered stone? Better than quartz. Better than granite. Man-made metamorphic rock? Stain, etch, scratch, graffiti, and bacteria resistant? Ringing any bells amidst the quartz conundrum? If you are not certified in sintered stone, you should move now. The industry is shifting. For a limited time, we are providing free displays to fabricators looking to get into sintered stone. Lapitec displays can be ordered free of charge by emailing lapitec@caragreen.com

Lapitec Surfacing - Engineered For The Future

Still using Quartz as your “go to” surface? Snap out of it! Lapitec sintered stone far outperforms quartz, is competitively priced and is (in our humble opinions) much more appealing and timeless. With seven textures and colors ranging from deep black to brilliant white, Lapitec addresses all the shortcomings of quartz and granite. Specifically engineered to be the next generation of surfacing, Lapitec will not yellow (like quartz), can not be scratched (like quartz) and will not react to heat (like quartz). The minds behind the creation of quartz are the ones that proactively invented sintered stone to replace quartz, and the time is now. Widely accepted as the “what’s next” in surfacing, Lapitec also boasts hydrophilic properties, which mean anti-graffiti and anti-pollution. Yes, it breaks down pollution. Think about buildings that actually give back to the environment. Quartz was queen, but its reign is over. The heat is on, and Lapitec can stand up to it!

To Build Is To Restore

What if buildings could actually benefit the environment? Many architecture firms have adopted this concept and use green roofs or solar panels in their construction. But what if the building cladding itself could improve the surrounding air and break down pollution? Seems Utopian, but it is a reality with Lapitec. The sintered stone was innovated to have an inherent technology that uses BIOMIMICRY, in that it emulates, or behaves as a tree, breaking down CO2. 100 square meters is equivalent to over 25 trees in the amount of CO2 it can break down. Oh, and it kills E. coli and staph on its surface as well. Still using quartz? Catch up! Sintered stone has taken man-made stone to a whole new level.

Competition

Everybody likes a little competition. OK, a lot of competition. While NCAA playoffs descend upon us, we thought we would reflect on our own approach to competition. There is usually no benefit to one player in a product category, it makes that category suspect and invalidated. It is like having that one guy on the team who hogs the ball. It is hard to win that way. Having other companies that share the product category with you is important.

Take sintered stone. Lapitec is one brand. Dekton and Neolith are the two others. (We are not getting into all the me-too porcelains, they are not sintered stone). Without the other two, there is not a product category. They validate the category and should all grow together. PaperStone is another brand. It’s primary competitor is Richlite. Good, they validate the composite category, despite being competitors. It is pretty simple. You should welcome competition but know how to differentiate at the same time.

Now, when it comes to the NCAA, we don’t have any advice there. We would have a Devil of a time telling you who may win and who may Pack it in. There is no need to be Cavalier about it if you win or go wallow in your Boilermaker if you lose. Good luck with your picks and best of luck from the Tarheel State.

Thinking Big by Building Small

We have always had big aspirations for our products, but in recent months we have learned to celebrate the little things. Working with several couples as they set off on adventures in buses or vans, we have provided them with healthy materials to keep them safe and cozy in their small space. UltraTouch insulation was a natural choice for Gary and Beth Hodges (follow their adventure @the198bus) as they didn’t want nasty, pink fiberglass in the walls of their upfit bus in which they plan to live and travel.

This got us thinking about tiny homes!  A lot of our products are suited to these small spaces, especially considering the limited space. You want to make the right (healthy) choices, right? Durat is lightweight and adds a pop of color to counters, tables, or benches. PaperStone is super durable, has an organic natural look, and it’s warm, matte finish won’t come off glossy in a small intimate space. Lapitec with its natural palette and 7 textures would be a great surface to chop directly on AND integrate an induction burner underneath to get limited surfaces to do double duty.

For less mobile tiny homes, reSAWN cladding (especially charred Shou Sugi Ban) would create a beautiful, resilient exterior that would really distinguish the home from its now-behemoth looking neighbors. We have big expectations for our future but we also realize that it is the little things that matter.

Porcelain Tiles As Countertops? Not So Fast

Are tile countertops making a comeback? No, but porcelain companies are trying to scale up their thin tiles into countertop worthy sizes, in order to capitalize on the ultracompact stone, or sintered stone category, which is the next big thing in the surfacing world.

Everyone at the Kitchen and Bath Show (KBIS) was clamoring to show their scaled up porcelain tiles and try to elbow in on true sintered stone materials, which are far superior to quartz and guaranteed to take quartz market share over the next decade. Don't get duped by these thin format tiles though, they are brittle, hard to handle and can chip easily. The true sintered stone category, which is the next generation of man made stone, is exclusive to brands like Lapitec, Dekton and Neolith. Lapitec was designed to include a 3cm thickness, a defacto standard in the countertop world. You can't scale up to that. The process has to be designed to support it. Be wary of the tile companies that are screaming "me too" in the porcelain world because the products are truly a different process and were designed for different applications. Stick to your walls and floors, tile guys.

GreenBuild

We were so excited to head to GreenBuild and see what Boston had in store. Familiar faces and some new innovations were present, most notably the presence of “biophilia” and “Biophilic design.”

While Green and Build may have some word fatigue, Biophilic Design is THE hot topic for building materials Emanating nature in a space, lots of literal green instead of just the word are really trending in materials.

Texture is also the feel good feature of many building products. The hands on aesthetic is really taking off in building materials.

Acoustics is also making itself heard, with a big focus on human comfort. Sorry, Loud Diedre in Cube 6, we are tuning you out with some sound control.

Rethink Pollution - Watch How a Building Can Purify Air

As our cities expand up and out, the built environment needs to adapt to reduce pollution instead of cause it. Buildings that clean the air are a real thing and Lapitec is at the forefront of the technology making it happen.

Lapitec’s engineered slabs are sintered, making them UV, scratch and stain resistant, and suitable for interior and exterior uses. The 1cm material in supersize slabs are ideal for exterior cladding applications and flooring. The 2 and 3cm slabs are great for countertops. Best of all, the materials are self cleaning.  Sound impossible?

This Surface Reduces Pollution Inside and Out

The epitome of surfacing materials has arrived.  A material that can be used indoor and out as a countertop, flooring, on walls or as external cladding. While the applications are unlimited, the performance is even more jaw-dropping. Lapitec sintered stone surfaces clean the air. That is right, they remove pollutants from indoor and outdoor air. One of the most common outdoor and indoor pollutants, NOx, (pronounced “knocks”) is a family of pollutants that includes Nitric oxide (NO) and Nitrogen dioxide (NO2). These are gases known to form acid rain and smog, and are also responsible for the existence of particulate matter (PM) which are an indicator of air toxicity. Lapitec surfaces incorporate Bio-Care technology into the slabs of material which removes the NOx from the air. Photocatalysis, which is the reaction of light and a catalyst (TiO2), helps spur the reaction in an exterior environment and breaks the pollutant down. Titanium Dioxide has been studied extensively for this purpose and Lapitec has used that technology to make an amazing, nearly indestructible surface, even better. The next level of sustainability has been achieved.

For more information on the self-cleaning properties of Lapitec, or for a lunch and learn on the material, email lapitec@caragreen.com.

Can You Feel Me?

Textures are in. Surfaces that make you want to touch them and offer a finish that is not simply polished, like most natural stone and granite, are the holy grail in the design space right now. Being able to design around something that is not glaring and reflecting light all over the place offers designers a way to showcase all of the elements of a space and not have to navigate around a surface that is serving as a disco ball.

PaperStone has always had a matte finish, organic look, and wears in without wearing out. It can be left as is, with a raw, warm feel, or polished up to a slight gloss.

Lapitec offers eight finishes, from the smooth Lux, to the slightly subtle Satin, a rough, lava stone like Vesuvio and all the textures in between.  A natural anti-slip flooring, or gentle, run-your-hand-along me wall or countertop, Lapitec can wrap the interior or exterior of a building with its suite of textures, and unmatched UV stain and scratch resistance.

To experience these alternatives to the glaring surface we have become so used to, email us at info@caragreen.com to stop by or have samples sent your way.

Keep Your Guard Up

Lapitec continues to back up its claims of being the best new sintered stone on the market. Recently achieving GreenGuard certification, Lapitec continues to outpace competitors with its constant achievements in the sintered stone space. Perfect for outdoor kitchens, countertops, flooring, wall and exterior cladding, Lapitec is available in 1.2cm, 2cm, and 3cm thicknesses. Unlike other sintered stones, Lapitec is through body, so the color and patterning are consistent throughout the slabs. Other sintered stones are simply printed on top, making edging difficult. The Highest Performance Surface is Here - You need to know about this

The next generation of surfacing is finally here.  Lapitec sintered stone is stain and scratch resistant, acid and alkali resistant.  Unlike granite and Quartz which are mined from stone quarries as large blocks and cut into slabs, Lapitec is formed under high heat using no resins and has a very low silica content compared to stone-based products. Lapitec is available in 3cm, 2cm and 1.2cm thicknesses and 7 different finishes, ranging from high gloss Lux to more textured Fossil and Vesuvio.   Lapitec XXL Slabs are 132” x 59” and suitable for outdoor use, flooring and exterior cladding, as well as countertop applications.  Unlike other sintered stone, Lapitec is through body color and veining, meaning the color and patterning goes all the way through the slab.  Other sintered stone products are printed on top and edging becomes difficult.

CaraGreen is currently accepting applicants who want to join the certified fabricator network.  If you are interested in becoming Lapitec certified, please email brenna@caragreen.com.  If you are interested in getting Lapitec samples, please email kim@caragreen.com.

Problem SOLVED

The next new material has finally arrived and it solves nearly all the problems surfacing has experienced over the last century.  Lapitec, a sintered stone, is formed from minerals compressed under high heat into 1, 2 or 3cm slabs.  Unrivaled by any existing material on the market, Lapitec is acid, alkali, heat, frost, abrasion and UV resistant.  It is suitable for interiors and exteriors and is available in seven different finishes.  Superior to quartz, and a more modern aesthetic than many quartz finishes, Lapitec takes engineered stone to the next level of engineering.  Already wildly popular in Europe, Lapitec has officially launched in the US. CaraGreen is proud to be the distributor of this revolutionary new material in the Southeast.
