Between The Sheets With PaperStone

With tariff-free, healthy materials in higher demand than ever, PaperStone is one of our favorite domestic surfacing alternatives. Last month, we visited the PaperStone headquarters in Hoquiam, WA, and got to see exactly what goes on between the sheets of this recycled paper composite.

Granite Graduates With A Degree In Obsolescence

THE new acronym in kitchen design - customers are asking for A.B.G. - Anything But Granite.

This article on realtor.com highlights this movement away from granite and features PaperStone, one of the most versatile options on the market for those looking to breach the granite wall that has been holding back the surface industry for decades. It’s free of silica, easy to cut, performs like stone, has high recycled content, 13 colors, and is one of the more economical surfacing materials out there.

Trouble In Silica Valley

If you were looking for yet another reason to ditch quartz and seek out healthier surfacing options, the latest news will have you headed for the hills (the hills of Italy to grab some sintered stone, if you ask us). According to recent reports, the effects of processing engineered stone are resulting in a critical silicosis epidemic. Silicosis is a life-threatening lung disease caused by breathing in tiny bits of silica found in materials like quartz. A healthy environment starts with healthy people. Using materials like Lapitec, PaperStone, and Durat, which contain zero to trace amounts of silica, promote health at every level, from production to installation.

Good Bedside Manner

PaperStone is as versatile as they come. Kitchen island? Duh. Outdoor kitchen? Sure. Modular bench? Sign us up! When woodworker and artist, Michael Alm, came to us with his plans to build a nightstand out of PaperStone CoverPly (after building this amazing record cabinet out of PaperStone) for his converted attic bedroom project, we were all in. Talk about good bedside manner. Michael’s video is awesome and shows just how easy it is to work with PaperStone. Check out the video here.

Quartz Quandary

We have pitted multiple of our surfaces against quartz surfaces over the years, but many were caught off guard when Cambria filed a lawsuit against Chinese suppliers, ultimately securing a ruling that quadrupled the price of Chinese quartz in the US. This will impact many suppliers and projects. We continue to post about this on our blog and in our podcast series so you can stay informed. Products like PaperStone and IceStone are great alternatives, proven, and always made in the USA.

With all the tariffs and duties being smacked onto building materials, the case for buying products made in the USA is even stronger. IceStone countertops are made in Brooklyn; Durat solid surface and sinks are made in Georgia; PaperStone is made in Washington; Beautiful, economical solutions exist right here, right now. And with China no longer accepting our recycled material, we need local products made with our own recycled materials. IceStone recycled glass, Durat recycled plastics, and PaperStone recycled paper all keep waste out of the landfill and create stunning surfaces.

Waste Is A Resource

Don’t be a tosser. That garbage can be put to good use. Durat uses recycled plastic as a filler in its solid surface. The company is exploring the use of ocean plastic in its manufacture. PaperStone uses recycled paper paired with a petroleum free resin to create an incredibly durable surface with an organic, natural feel and steel-like strength. Kirei EchoPanel uses recycled PET to create colorful, beautiful acoustical treatments. CaraGreen believes that waste can be a resource, and we partner with companies that share in this belief.  So let’s get innovative and stop putting the “fill” in landfill.

Everybody likes a little competition. OK, a lot of competition. While NCAA playoffs descend upon us, we thought we would reflect on our own approach to competition. There is usually no benefit to one player in a product category, it makes that category suspect and invalidated. It is like having that one guy on the team who hogs the ball. It is hard to win that way. Having other companies that share the product category with you is important.

Take sintered stone. Lapitec is one brand. Dekton and Neolith are the two others. (We are not getting into all the me-too porcelains, they are not sintered stone). Without the other two, there is not a product category. They validate the category and should all grow together. PaperStone is another brand. It’s primary competitor is Richlite. Good, they validate the composite category, despite being competitors. It is pretty simple. You should welcome competition but know how to differentiate at the same time.

Now, when it comes to the NCAA, we don’t have any advice there. We would have a Devil of a time telling you who may win and who may Pack it in. There is no need to be Cavalier about it if you win or go wallow in your Boilermaker if you lose. Good luck with your picks and best of luck from the Tarheel State.

Thinking Big by Building Small

We have always had big aspirations for our products, but in recent months we have learned to celebrate the little things. Working with several couples as they set off on adventures in buses or vans, we have provided them with healthy materials to keep them safe and cozy in their small space. UltraTouch insulation was a natural choice for Gary and Beth Hodges (follow their adventure @the198bus) as they didn’t want nasty, pink fiberglass in the walls of their upfit bus in which they plan to live and travel.

This got us thinking about tiny homes!  A lot of our products are suited to these small spaces, especially considering the limited space. You want to make the right (healthy) choices, right? Durat is lightweight and adds a pop of color to counters, tables, or benches. PaperStone is super durable, has an organic natural look, and it’s warm, matte finish won’t come off glossy in a small intimate space. Lapitec with its natural palette and 7 textures would be a great surface to chop directly on AND integrate an induction burner underneath to get limited surfaces to do double duty.

For less mobile tiny homes, reSAWN cladding (especially charred Shou Sugi Ban) would create a beautiful, resilient exterior that would really distinguish the home from its now-behemoth looking neighbors. We have big expectations for our future but we also realize that it is the little things that matter.

Want Not. Waste Not.

When a wood product company rejected thousands of board feet of its Laminated Veneer Lumber because it was out of spec, the material was destined for the dumpster. Until the creative minds atPaperStone decided that the stability and strength of the PaperStone product could bring new life to the scrap material. Applying a thin layer of PaperStone to the LVL on both sides, reinforced and stabilized the material into sheets of incredibly durable, cost effective Plyboard. This material is ideally suited for shelving, benches and casework or any other application that needs the surface durability of PaperStone at a very competitive price point. For more information on Plyboard and samples, please email us at paperstone@caragreen.com.

Best in Show - PaperStone

Are you a dog person?

A little can go a long way when it comes to supporting innovators in the industry. PaperStone is a great material for any innovative design that needs a balance between ease of use, beauty and durability. Often looked over because of the word “paper,” the reality is that PaperStone performs like stone and is a strong as steel. It is paper transformed into stone. Just ask D2 Architecture, who used PaperStone in their creation at Bark n Build in Dallas, TX, where they won Best in Show for their stunning dog house, which was tailored to the needs of the aging canine. Their submission was true Barkitecture at work.

We were so excited to head to GreenBuild and see what Boston had in store. Familiar faces and some new innovations were present, most notably the presence of “biophilia” and “Biophilic design.”

While Green and Build may have some word fatigue, Biophilic Design is THE hot topic for building materials Emanating nature in a space, lots of literal green instead of just the word are really trending in materials.

Texture is also the feel good feature of many building products. The hands on aesthetic is really taking off in building materials.

Acoustics is also making itself heard, with a big focus on human comfort. Sorry, Loud Diedre in Cube 6, we are tuning you out with some sound control.

Domestic squabble? You would not mind spending the night in this dog house! Specifically designed for the Bark n Build contest, D2 created this aging-canine focused structure out of PaperStone spines and a stretch tension fabric. Easy-access features like a dog-ramp and easily accessible food and water make this entry a definite contender for top prize. We were excited to provide materials to D2 and hope PaperStone gives them a leg up on the competition.

Remodeling - Tips and Tricks for Using PaperStone

PaperStone is an ideal material for a remodel.

For the current generation of homebuyers or renters, they are looking for spaces that represent their values. Those often include respect for the environment and modern or current aesthetics that are not what their parents had.

PaperStone ticks all the boxes:

☑ It’s stone-like performance makes it a great replacement for granite or quartz.
☑ It is made in the USA unlike most quartz, which typically comes from China.
☑ It can be cut on site, using standard woodworking tools.
☑ Contractors can do it themselves, avoiding costly stone fabrication.
☑ Available with 100% recycled paper.

Tips And Techniques

Can I miter PaperStone edges?

Of Course! The main trick is to make sure that you attach the face of the mitered edge to a substrate or blocking below. This increases the surface area of the cap sheet that is adhered to another fibrous material (substrate). Also, using mechanical fasteners ensures an even more reliable edge, as with any other mitered material.

Please email us for our document on Mitering PaperStone Edges if you want more details.

There Once Was A Tradeshow In Dallas

Our first time at Metrocon in Dallas was a tremendous success. Sporting the Modern Surfaces collection along with reSAWN Timber’s Charred wood, Wonderwall’s reclaimed wood and Kosisen’s transparent colored plywood, CaraGreen’s booth was unmatched. With our Create Better backdrop we showed Texas that everything is Better in North Carolina. An untapped market for many of the brands, the attendees were clamoring to get samples and information and find a way to use the innovative PaperStone, and colorful Durat on their projects. Our Biophilic Design presentation was sold out and we received great feedback on the topic and great booth traffic afterward from those who attended. Thank you Texas for the hospitality, now, back to Raleigh!

Can You Feel Me?

Textures are in. Surfaces that make you want to touch them and offer a finish that is not simply polished, like most natural stone and granite, are the holy grail in the design space right now. Being able to design around something that is not glaring and reflecting light all over the place offers designers a way to showcase all of the elements of a space and not have to navigate around a surface that is serving as a disco ball.

PaperStone has always had a matte finish, organic look, and wears in without wearing out. It can be left as is, with a raw, warm feel, or polished up to a slight gloss.

Lapitec offers eight finishes, from the smooth Lux, to the slightly subtle Satin, a rough, lava stone like Vesuvio and all the textures in between.  A natural anti-slip flooring, or gentle, run-your-hand-along me wall or countertop, Lapitec can wrap the interior or exterior of a building with its suite of textures, and unmatched UV stain and scratch resistance.

To experience these alternatives to the glaring surface we have become so used to, email us at info@caragreen.com to stop by or have samples sent your way.

Countertop Trends You Need to Know About

Quartz is Queen...for the moment.  The days of granite are waning in progressive markets as most stone fabricators are seeing clients replacing granite with quartz or alternative materials.  The time for new, better looking or better performing materials has arrived.  The onslaught of Chinese pre-fab granite and quartz has really flooded the market, and savvy designers are looking for differentiators.  Sintered stones like Lapitec, are taking center stage as the high end “must have” products.  In parallel, modern surfaces, like IceStone, Durat modern solid surface, and PaperStone are offering unique aesthetics that perform as well as their peers.

Modern Surfaces Collection Bumps Quartz

Apologies to the hundreds of quartz companies out there peddling Chinese, Indian, and South American quartz, but your days are numbered.  With quartz flooding the market, and fabricators stockpiling containers, private labeling, and bringing in multiple brands without loyalty, the door has opened for alternative materials.  Durat, PaperStone, and IceStone surfaces with recycled content have positioned themselves as the perfect oasis for designers and architects who are drowning in copycat quartz collections. These three brands have partnered to offer durable and beautiful alternatives that have a good backstory as well as a refined palette to make surfacing decisions easy and respectable.  For more information on the collection, or to follow their journey as they roll out the collection, email info@modern-surfaces.com or follow us on instagram @modernsurfaces.

A Note of Thanks

Thanks to all of our partners and suppliers that worked to make GreenBuild a success.  It was as much fun as it was work, maybe a little heavy on the fun.  But we loved working with the great network of partners that is making Modern Surfaces come to life.  There are options after granite and quartz, and we are bringing them to you at the right time, the right price and to the right, leading edge design group that wants to get out from under the heavy thumb of the mining industry.  PEACE OF MIND not PIECE OF MINED, we say!

Dolling Up Durham

PaperStone CoverPly and Kirei Echopanel were great additions at American Underground in Durham.  Unlike the solid PaperStone, CoverPly uses recycled paper for the surface only.  The durable exterior of CoverPly with its layered birch interior enabled a cost-effective, attractive surface.  EchoPanel was a great choice to add acoustic control to the open ceiling.  With their extensive selection of systems, high recycled content and a myriad of colors and shapes, EchoPanel is an easy acoustic solution that designers can use to create and complement new or existing spaces.   {Information: info@caragreen.com}

Can you handle one more Shade of Grey?

Of course you can.  PaperStone’s new Graphite tone fits beautifully between the subtle Pewter and dashingly dark Slate that PaperStone currently offers.  This new color is targeted at modern commercial surfacing applications as well as serving the savvy homeowner who wants something that looks and performs like stone, but has a warmer feel and better environmental story.

The material is available in a variety of thicknesses up to 1-1/4” and can be used for horizontal or vertical applications.  If you have not tried this durable product – here is your excuse – email for samples or a product demo – paperstone@caragreen.com.

Deck The Halls!

Too early?  Not for PaperStone’s new textured panels:  DiaDeck and DiaScreen.  A new take on the popular surfacing material adds a pattern to the surface, on one side or both, that allows it to be used for decorative vertical or horizontal surfaces.   The criss-cross pattern also allows skid resistance for stair treads and flooring as well.   Samples are available now, and all colors are available in DiaDeck and DiaScreen options. Fa la la la la la la la la!

Madonna Was Wrong!!

It sure didn't feel like we were living in a material world at GreenBuild last week.  The show standouts for materials were PaperStone, IceStone, and Kirei who were showing what is in vogue for sustainable finishes.  Cosentino was there with their Dekton and ECO lines, and there were a few other regional players, but overall the interior finishes were underrepresented.

But, what an opportunity to shine!  The architects and designers were clamoring to see the new textured finishes from PaperStone and some of their new "beta" colors as they test the market appetite for their new palette.   IceStone displayed their new two-toned Gotham Grey - which was emphatically received by the "who's who" of the architecture world.  Kirei had a stunning display of EchoPanel in its vibrant colors and shapes on display. We are very excited to roll these out to our customer base over the next few months.  And don't worry Madonna - we are still crazy for you too.

Spring Cleaning

The focus of the design community on mitigating waste has resulted in interest in less “sample heavy” design libraries.  We hear you!  We have color cards that capture the aesthetics and color palette for most of our products and offer these in lieu of bulky sample boxes when requested.  A library “refresh” is more of a “clean out” for a lot of firms, as materials change.  If you would like any color cards for Durat, Meld, BarkHouse, PaperStone, EcoFusion, or TorZo, please let us know and we can drop them off or email them to your firm.

Please email info@caragreen.com or call 919.929.3009 with any requests.

CoverPly from PaperStone

CoverPly is a lightweight, durable version of PaperStone that is more cost-effective, while retaining the texture and sustainability you are used to in standard PaperStone products.  CoverPly is comprised of plywood sandwiched between two layers of PaperStone’s paper and proprietary PetroFree™ resins to create the same look and feel as PaperStone, with a layered edging profile..  The CoverPly sheets are available in most standard colors and can be used for bathroom partitions, table tops and most surfacing applications.  Please email barbara@caragreen.com with any questions.

Back and Better than Ever

CaraGreen is pleased to announce its partnership with PaperStone, a leader in sustainable surfacing; whose beautiful panels are perfect options for countertops, partitions and dividers.  With aggressive new pricing and color options, CaraGreen and PaperStone are able to offer economical and beautiful options for creative, innovative designs and projects.

PaperStone® is a sustainable composite material made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper, and PetroFree™ phenolic resins and natural pigments. As PaperStone ages, it will assume a pleasing, lustrous, seasoned appearance that is an inherent characteristic of the material. This is a natural progression of a natural product, resulting in a beautifully soft, rich patina. The aging process takes time and, much like fine hardwood, a deep luster will develop in areas of heavier use.

For samples, binders or literature, and the latest pricing please email info@caragreen.com or call 919.929.3009.
