Whether you are a homeowner renovating a kitchen or backyard, or a commercial architect designing a hospital, stadium or renovating a lobby or bathroom, you should be using sintered stone.

What is Sintered Stone?

Never heard of sintered stone? No problem. Sintered stone is still relatively untapped in the US market, but it is starting to gain traction in the design community. Sintered stone is unique in its ability to make people, homes, and buildings healthier. Let’s learn about the benefits of sintered stone!

1. It is the Most Durable Surface Money Can Buy

Sintered stone is a matrix of minerals heated (or sintered) to form a solid, impenetrable mass. Its surface cannot be etched, scratched, burned, or stained. It offers superior durability to quartz in every measurable way. In a sea of quartz, sintered stone stands alone.

2. Inherent Surface Texture

Unlike quartz and stone that must be blasted or otherwise treated to create a texture, sintered stone has built-in depth, feel, and anti-slip properties. Brands like Lapitec (Latin for “stone technology”) offer varying levels of texture suitable for anything from countertops to shower floors and pool decks.

3. Fully Heat Resistant

For most materials, the answer to the common consumer question “can I put a hot pot on it?” is a resounding “no”. Not so for sintered stone. Sintered stone is formed at extremely high temperatures. Nothing in your kitchen will come close to damaging it. Unlike quartz, which may become yellowed or marred by exposure to extreme heat, sintered stone is unaffected by heat. It’s even suitable for radiant flooring.

4. Indoor, Outdoor, and Everywhere

Sintered stone may be used in almost any application. It’s equally resistant to cold as it is to heat, so it’s a great material for outdoor spaces in temperate climates. Sintered stone us UV-resistant and will not fade or lose integrity with exposure to sun, unlike quartz and other materials. Your sintered stone patio will look as good in ten years as it does today!

5. Be a Trendsetter, Not a Follower

Sintered stone is the next big thing. It’s a niche product in the North American market, but it’s growing in popularity with every passing day. Sintered stone is already widely adopted in Europe as a high quality, attractive, and practical solution for home surfaces. Wouldn’t you rather set a trend than follow one? Sintered stone gives you that opportunity.

6. Through-body Color and Pattern

Sintered Stone is created in such a way that the color and pattern goes all the way through the slab.  Unlike porcelains, which typically use a printing technology to achieve patterning, sintered stone’s manufacturing process was designed with through body in mind, so there is no issue with edge detail and seaming.  When you have printed patterns, any cuts can expose the unpatterned interior of the slab and cause unsightly lines that interrupt the desired patterns.  Sintered stone was designed to avoid that but allowing the pattern to penetrate through the entire slab.

7. Healthy For You and For the Planet

Sintered stone is a healthier choice for your home. Its structure is bound together by heat and pressure, not resins and plastic. It is not a petroleum product, unlike quartz surfaces that use petroleum based resin as a binder. It’s also safer and healthier to install due to its low silica content. Silica dust causes silicosis, a permanent lung disease that results in tens of thousands of deaths worldwide. Brands like Lapitec produce silica-free sintered stone products, so you and your installer can breathe easy.

Sintered stone does not require sealants like many other building materials. Its surface is durable and stain-resistant, so you can avoid treatments using toxic chemicals. Some sintered stone products even react with UV light to break down CO2. 100 square meters of sintered stone can remove the CO2 equivalent of 25 trees from our atmosphere!

Lapitec’s sintered stone products include a material called Bio-Care. This material is baked into the surface during production and imparts E. Coli and Staphylococcus killing properties to the end product. Sintered stone surfaces are safer and cleaner than other products on the market.
